Friday just gone our ROAR community gathered in Ashford for the first of what we hope will be many evenings of football moving forward.
Our volunteers had been hard at work in the run up and with the pitch booked, transport sorted and footballs & refreshments purchased we were ready for kick off!
Despite a moody looking weather forecast, 11 brave souls assembled from all over Kent and we were blessed with sunshine and a perfect warm evening.
Amid speculation that he was avoiding too much running around, ROAR volunteer Tony stepped up to referee and we were split in to two teams. One team hailing from Dover and the other representing the rest of Kent.
In the first half, despite some spectacular last ditch challenges and putting in the hard yards up front, the Dover team were unable to find the back of the net and trailed 3-0 at half time thanks to good running and quick feet from Wayne & Martin, accompanied by tidy finishing on the part of their Rest of Kent teammates.
After a short but much needed rest, and with the deficit in mind, Tony joined team Dover for the second half as they set out to work their way back in to the game. For the first 5 minutes off the half, they made the most over their man advantage as the Rest of Kent struggled to break out from the back.
Dover continued to probe and the second half deadlock was finally broken when a line breaking pass from Calum found Ella up top who kept a cool head for a tidy finish.
Whilst Dover did manage another goal before the final whistle, the Rest of Kent defence remained resolute from then onwards and the Dover side were unable to find that elusive equalizer with the game finishing 3-2.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all and the opportunity to get a bit of exercise in whilst spending time together outside of the regular settings was truly invaluable.
Congratulations for now to the Rest of Kent team. Until next time…
